Around133,000 prisoners in the US are kept in for-profit private prisons (around 8.2 %). While the overall number of people in prison has been declining since its height in 2012, the proportion of those housed in private prisons has remained the same in most states and has even gone up in a few; with states like New Mexico having 50% of all their prisoners living in private facilities. So that leaves the question as to whether this controversial practice should be abolished?
