By clearcutting mountains of their trees, the mountain grounds and soil are made unstable.
When a large storm comes, the top soil, unused cut trees, destabilized trees, stumps and large branches, (forestry euphemistic term: slash) washes down the mountains into the streams and rivers, becoming torrents loaded with enormously destructive logs, which destroy the bridges and then wash out just off the coast. Waves then deposit all of the above on New Zealand's pristine beaches. The salt from the sea acts like a preservative preventing it from decaying.
Once picture post card perfect beaches are rendered unusable and dangerous.
Only some logs are washed back out to sea and become a hazard to navigation. Large tree trunks can damage even large cargo ships let alone sinking small boats. The soil gets deposited on the reefs and covers the coral and kelp. Sea-life suffers and the coastal water becomes murky. Divers see little.
